Thamsar is one of the most exciting passes of Himachal Pradesh. It is located in the lap of the Dhauladhar and Pir-Panjal ranges of Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh, allowing you to experience a beauty of the Indian Himalayas. The pass is full of natural beauty, which is mostly hidden behind snow-capped mountains and unexplored terrains. This part of Himalayas provides beautiful several day trekking trips who love adventure. The trail to pass goes through lush green forests, beautiful landscapes of Chota Bhangal valley, villages of Badagran, Rajgundha, Kukkargandha and the meadows of Plachak and Panhartu. Nature is at its finest when you are entering Thamsar; there are two lakes on both sides of the pass.

The Thamsar Pass is a trekking route which Includes a thrilling adventurous experience on one of the Himachal most beautiful passes. Hikers will see a harsh terrain and the peace with such high pass altitude that is ultimately responsible for making this hike worth taking advantage of.

The Thamsar Pass Trek starts from Bara Garan village, Mandi and takes you through challenging trails, glacial fields, rivers and harsh moraines. Giving us an insight into Gaddi people’s life, hikers will get to know about and understand their lifestyle; Also, know about the culture of the Buddhist in that location and His holiness Dalai Lama’s residence.

During this exciting adventure session, MadTrek provides you with shared accommodation, which is very much comfortable, all the meals you can enjoy during the adventure trip and support of a trained and experienced guide. In addition to this, camping tools and equipment like camping style dome tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mattresses, cooking utensils etc. will provide by MadTrek. Day 1Trek | Bara Garan - Plachak (8530 ft.)

Trek through the picturesque villages of Rajgundha and Kukkargandh and experience the regions wooden houses constructed in the Himalayan style architecture. You’ll be amazed by the village area’s beautiful landscapes. Afterwards, carry on a trek towards beautiful pastures and camping ground of Plachak. You will spend the night at Plachak.

Day 2Trek | Plachak - Panhartu (10826 ft.)

Walking on glaciers and snow and then crossing the waterfall at Guhardi to arrive the verdant Panhartu meadows will be a once in a lifetime moment for you. Enjoy the surrounding views, and enjoy the night with the warmth of bonfire in the tents.

Day 3Trek | Panhartu - Thamsar Pass - Panhartu (15748 ft.)

On the fourth day, we will be climbing the Thamsar Pass, which is approximately at the height of 15748 ft. If required, when you seek to cross the twin lakes at the base of the pass, we will rope you up. As you go up, you’ll be overwhelmed by the charm of the location having the lake on both sides, Himalayan ranges such as Pir Panjal, Kalihani and the whole Bhara Bhangal around you. We will then come back to our campsite and will rest there for the night.

Day 4Trek | Panhartu - Raj Gunda

After breakfast, begin moving towards Raj Gunda, which is around 16 kilometres trek. Spend and enjoy the night at Raj Gunda.

Day 5Trek from Raj Gunda to Bara Garan

Wake up with morning tea call and beautiful sunrise in the Rajgundha Valley. Post breakfast, begin the trek back to Bara Garan and make sure to go for short sightseeing session in this picturesque tiny hamlet before leaving. Follows the same trail from where you came from. The scenic views from the villages and lush green meadows, cabbage fields around are perfect for delving into the beauty of Rajgundha Valley. It is the end of the trip. After that, hire a taxi till Barot, and you’re free to explore nearby places, or you can immediately dive/travel back to Mandi or Bir.



Thamsar Pass is situated in the Kangra, a Himachal Pradesh district. If you are interested in doing this trek, reach Barot first, which is Mandi district. Now, you might ask how to reach Barot. There are no direct transport options to reach Barot. Here are some travel options…

  1. By Air – If you’re going to come by air, then it’s going to be the best way as the nearest airport is in Bhuntar, Kullu called “Kullu Manali airport”. So, from any of India’s major cities, you can quickly get to Kulu. From Kullu Manali airport, the distance to Barot is about 125 Km. Hiring a cab straight to Barot from here won’t be an issue.
  2. By Bus – This will be the most accessible approach if you’re willing to travel from Delhi or Chandigarh, particularly if you’re on a limited budget. There is no direct commute to Barot. You have to change twice to reach this beautiful village. Take a bus from Delhi to Mandi, it takes about 10 to 12 hours to reach Mandi. Take another bus to place called Ghatasni (Mandi-Pathankot hightway) where you can take local bus to Barot or hire a taxi.
  3. By train – If you’re looking for the cheapest way of travel to reach Barot, then it would be by train. Still, it can get a little challenging as there is no railway station nearby Barot. To reach Barot, take a train till Pathankot and travel on a bus to Palampur for approximately 4-5 hours. From Palampur, take a bus to Mandi and get down at place called Ghatasni. From Ghatasni, take another local bus to Barot or hire a cab.

Now that you have entered Barot, you need directions to reach trek’s starting point. The place is known Bara Garan village, hire a taxi from Barot to get to that locality which is around 20km.


Mid-June to October months are the best time to visit this location, as the favourable weather here during these months make this trek more pleasurable. There chances of snow-fall during June and August months are quite high. The day temperatures remain warm ranging from 12-20 °C but nights get a little cold, and temperature may sometimes drop to even -6 °C.
